A seasonal poster for Day of the Dead with Little Lety the Vampire dressed as The Catrina.
As usual, everything starts with a hand made sketch. To make this drawing, I take as inspiration the original zinc etching of La Catrina.
I could start painting the face of Lety totally white, but I wanted to give the impression that she has the face covered with makeup, so I started with a purple base for her skin instead.
In a layer above the skin one, I applid a hard brush to simulate the make up strokes.
The Catrina is famous for its characteristic huge hat adorned with flowers and feathers.
To simulate the light of multiple candles in the background, I apply a bokeh background.
The torso is made the same way as the face: a burple base with simulated make up on top.
I manipulate the decorative elements in illustrator, and then I import them to photoshop.
Applying effects, I can quickly adjust the appearance of the decoration.
The final touch, a jade necklace. I just made one single sphere, then copy paste to create the necklace.
And that's all! The illustration is complete. Sorry for the watermark, guys, but it is for marketing reasons.
