Monster High: Lagoona Blue

An underwater portrait of Monster High's character Lagoona Blue and her piranha pet Neptuna.

As usual, everything starts with a sketch, scanned and imported into Photoshop. Then I preserve the drawing line in a different layer so I can work with color under it.

I'm self-convinced the complete intention of my final work can be read through the eyes of the characters in the illustration, and, as cliche as may sound, the eyes are the true reflection of the soul.

Never leave the background at the end for several reasons. The main one is, it reflects lights and shadows over all figures and objects in the painting, and since this one will have an underwater effect, it is important to work with it at an earlier stage

Fun fact: Lagoona is described as a "sea monster", but is often portrayed wearing a flower in her hair. I decide to change the flower for a starfish instead.

Around Lagoona's neck, I placed several spheres to construct a necklace. The process to create these marbles is the same I used for the eye's iris. I also applied a freckles texture all over Lagoona's body.

At a certain point, I realized that the hair did not look quite messy as you would expect in someone who moves underwater, So I added a new layer on top of the previous one to draw a few additional extensions.
